Take the next exit off the Interstate and find a world of quiet charm
and peaceful surroundings. Enter a world where the roads are narrow,
the pace is slowed and the distant steeple call people to gather.
There
are certain elements that characterize the rural church. The row
of multi-paned windows, the tin roof, the bell tower and the inevitable
cemetery nearby are all part of the scene. Believers come together
regularly to share, to celebrate and to pray. They gather to baptize
their young, marry their loved ones and bury their dead. For many,
the country church is the center of their lives.
COUNTRY CHURCH is my vision of such a rural gathering place. The painting was inspired by the Pleasant View Methodist Church on Highway 60 in Clark County, Indiana, and is a companion painting to COUNTRY
SCHOOLHOUSE.
